Come visit the magic world of the “Petite Camargue”, which is just next door to Montpellier, and visit the protected nature reserves with its exceptional wildlife and nature. When you go off on an excursion to Aigues-Mortes by our private coach, you will be able to admire the immense plain of the Camargue with its sea dunes, its Laguna and marshes where rice is cultivated. You also get to see all the emblematic animals of the region: pink flamingos and wild white horses as well as bulls.
During your French language stay in Montpellier, discover the medieval town of Aigues-Mortes and its salt lakes – the top chefs from all over the world are enthusiastic about this salt, the ‘Fleur de sel’.
Aigues-Mortes is an ancient medieval city surrounded by ramparts, built on the command of King Louis IX who is also known as Saint Louis. During the guided visit, you will explore the city, learn about the history and visit the monuments. Among the rich heritage of the town, you will have the chance to admire the church, “Notre Dame des Sablons” and its famous 1,634 m long ramparts with the famous “Tour de Constance” (a lookout tower).
On the other side of the ramparts, you will be able to see the salt mountains called the ‘salins’. The ‘Salins du Midi’ is the biggest centre for sea salt production in France. During the excursion, if you have signed up for a visit, you will go off to the Salins to visit the Camargue salt production by train.
You will get to try the delicate ‘fleur du sel’ (delicate crust on the surface of seawater as it evaporates), which is really appreciated by top French Chefs as a finishing salt to flavour and garnish food, adding extra quality to French gastronomy.
During your free time at the end of the excursion, feel free to climb onto the ramparts and visit the “Tour de Constance” from where you will have a breath-taking panoramic view of the Camargue, the “camelles” or mountains of salt at Salins. When you have finished exploring all the history of Aigues-Mortes, make the most of strolling down the little roads of the town to buy souvenirs in the local, little craft shops and taste the delicious sweet “fougasse” (seasoned flat bread), which is a culinary speciality of Aigues-Mortes, or taste the “vin de sables” made from traditional and noble grapes grown on the sand dunes of the Camargue.
