During your French language immersion program in Montpellier discover one of the most beautiful villages in France, Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert, as well as the breathtaking cave of Grotte de Clamouse.
Once you have arrived in Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, one of the most beautiful villages in France, a spiritual step on the way to Saint-Jaques de Compostelle, you will wander through the tiny village streets and make the most of the riches of a remarkable cultural heritage. Starting from the medieval square, where you will get to admire a magnificent centenary tree. You will follow the footsteps of St Jacques de Compostelle pilgrams by visiting the “Gellon” Abbey, classed as a UNESCO cultural heritage site “Joyau du premier art roman languedocien” (jewel from the first Roman art in the Languedoc region). You will really enjoy walking around the 11th Century cloister and particularly appreciate the peace and quiet.
In your free time, you can go for a walk on the “Cirque du bout du monde” (a pathway perched on sharp clifftops) or simply stroll down the high street with its many crafts shops. Here there are many Craftsmen and creators from the Hérault Valley who open their doors to show you their expertise: potters, iron sculptors, cardboard furniture makers, jewellery designers, art galleries, natural perfume and objects for children. After lunch, you will head off to the Clamouse Grotto. You will be able to explore this wonderful underground world, which was only discovered in 1945 and just 15 minutes away from St-Guilhem-le-Désert! You will explore a range of galleries during your visit through the Grotto where you will be plunged into a fairy-like universe; the beauty and variety of geographical features will leave you speechless. You will finish your visit in a spectacular way in the “Great Cathedral of time” room; here is found a show with lights and sound effects to enhance the beauty of the Grotto.
