Montpellier is a surprising city because it has managed to keep its old town quarters with tiny roads evolving alongside the new part of the town: the ‘quartier Antigone’. During your French language stay at our French immersion school in Montpellier, make sure you do not miss the chance to take part in our different visits that are organised to help you discover Montpellier and its cultural tourism.
The old part of the town is full of charm and a pleasure to visit, you will get to see the historical city centre of Montpellier, called “l’Ecusson”: its name comes from the shape of the maze that is demarcated by the large streets. You can go off and explore the medieval part of Montpellier, a real maze of little straight and winding roads.
Throughout this cultural visit, you will get to see all the ‘hotels particuliers’ (town mansions) (there are over 200 in Montpellier!) all beautiful ! But there are also the really important monuments of the city that you must see; ‘église Saint Roch (church)’, ‘église Saint Anne (church) or the famous ‘Arc de Triomphe’.
You can also visit Montpellier by wandering around the squares that are so characteristic of the town and where the town people meet up all year round for a traditional ‘apéritif’ drink. The ‘Saint Ravy’ square, the ‘Jean Jaurès’ square or the ‘Canourgue’ square…you will be spoilt for choice when enjoying life in the South of France!
If you choose to visit the new city, you will enter into another dimension, more dynamic and urban with its famous ‘Antigone’ area, the design of which was meant to represent Montpellier’s rebirth and show that it is a town that is capable of opening up to the future whilst still managing to conserve its Mediterranean charm.
During this visit, you will get the chance to wander through an area of the city which is made up of some really impressive facilities : ‘le Corum’, the ‘Polygone shopping centre’, the Olympic swimming pool and its magnificent multimedia library!
You will get to visit many very famous places, one of the most famous of which being the ‘Place de la comédie’ and its fountain ‘Fontaine des 3 Grâces’, providing a link between the charm of the new and old town. You can walk past the Opéra Comédie’, a building which is emblematic of the town and which certainly will not disappoint you!
If you go a bit further into the new town, you will discover 2 ‘esplanades’ (important public squares) which host many events all year round: sports competitions, getting acquainted with French gastronomy, Christmas markets. The ‘Esplanade Charles de Gaulle’ and the Esplanade de l’Europe’ are the most lively and animated where you can really make the most of your language immersion for learning French in the South of France!
